WEEK 9 HOMEWORK

 

  1. Your history reflection. Create a ‘3 recalls/2 questions/1 insight’ reflection for this video about Anh Doh’s experience as a refugee form Vietnam. This NEEDS to be completed by WEDNESDAY for our history lesson:  

 

2. 100 word challenge– this weeks prompt is: Hard   Beautiful   Brown   Worried   Camera. Include these 5 words in your piece. Perhaps try to include some of the techniques we have been learning about in writing lessons.

3. Create a letter for your buddy. It should introduce you and let your buddy get to know a little bit about you. You should also ask them some questions. remember to think about your audience-what words will they understand? What things will interest them? How can you publish/illustrate/decorate it so that it helps them understand and appeals to them?This letter will form the basis for your first meeting with your buddy. It is due on the first day of term  two.

History Lesson #3

Migration

Learning Goal: I can use an analogy to understand the experience of migrants to colonial Australia.

APK: Turn and talk with a partner; discussing the game you played for homework.

What is an ANALOGY?
Using a comparison of something familiar to help you understand aspects of something unfamiliar (brainstorm some examples like riding a bike).

Look at thinking skills document that is in your books and go through the steps of an analogy.

Step 1: define the migrant experience.
Step 2: pick a topic to use that is familiar to most of us and has many important similarities (eg: moving house, moving school).

Application: Read through these primary and secondary resources and take notes looking especially for ways that the experience was like moving home or school..

WEEK 7 HOMEWORK

Homework piece 1 – due by Thursday 16th March

This week there is no need to write a BTN response this week. Instead you get to play a game!

Click on the picture to open up the game- playing it will give you an idea of some of the different sorts of struggles and joys of different groups of people who lived at the goldfields in the 1850s. Try to play it more than once and using two or more characters so you get a picture of the different possibilities that may have awaited these groups.

Please make sure you play before Thursday (so tonight or tomorrow night) so you can share what you learned in our lesson on Thursday.

This week our viewing reflection is not from BTN. it’s actually from the National Film and Sound Archive ( http://dl.nfsa.gov.au/module/1614/) But you should still complete your reflection in the same way as you would a BTN reflection.

Make sure you have it finished before Friday as our lesson on it will be this Friday.

It has LOADS of interesting information about what life was like for early convict settlers and goes for 13 minutes. You could choose to write your reflection on this radio interview instead of the video if you’d prefer.

This Week’s Independent Tasks

This week Libby will be meeting with many of you to conference with you about your reading and writing. We will discuss your strengths and set some personal goals. When you are called for your conference you will need your draft book, your thinking skills book, your goal book, your reading journal and a just right book. Please have all of these ready so that you can join me quickly when you are called.

While Libby is conferencing everyone else will be working on the independent tasks listed below. During this time you have the opportunity to show the mature study habits expected in 5/6. You should work in silence where possible, ask friends first if you need assistance before asking Libby, and encourage each other to remained focussed.

These tasks should be worked on in the order shown here:

  1. History pretest-timeline (download this document for instructions and create the timeline in your Topic/Integrated Studies INB                         History of Australia Timeline pre-post test instructions
  2. Writing-Create a personal reflection about camp-this can be in any style (e.g. letter, poem, recount, newspaper article, advertisement…) but needs to include rich description of at least one or two aspects of camp. You can draft this into your draft book or directly onto a Word document. When you are finished drafting, you should reread it to make improvements in vocabulary, writer’s craft techniques, sentence structure and detail- add any extra information you think will make it clearer, more informative or more entertaining. Then edit your writing to fix any mistakes in spelling, punctuation, grammar and paragraphing. Then share with a partner and get their feedback for improvements. Once you have made all the improvements you should publish the piece on your blog. There are photos on ‘StudentShare – 5-6 2017 – Camp photos’. You may wish to choose one or two to add to your post.
  3. HOTMaths – log onto HOTMaths and choose one of the following units to reinforce or extend your learning. Complete the lessons and all the questions. If you need help finding your way to these places ask a year 6 expert:

4.  Continue with your writing piece from our writer’s traits lesson (The piece about an apple).  Ensure you remember the theme you have decided to portray as you write.

  1. Read reflection-read for 20 minutes. Complete a reading reflection in your reading journal. If you’ve had your reading conference, write a reflection describing what you did while you were reading to work towards your goal. Be specific-include quotes to show the parts where you had to think about your goal and say what you were thinking while you were reading.
  1. Creating personal semester goals –use this template to describe what you want to get better at this year. You can type your goals directly into the template- after you have finished delete all the instructions (in red).(ensure you begin this after recess on Thursday if you haven’t begun it earlier)      Goals for Semester 1 template
  1. Topic research-go to the learning weblinks page of Ant’s blog and choose a link  about history. Read or watch it and take notes using the FKEYS notetaking technique into your topic book.

Letter from Libby

Hi Kids,

Welcome to our class.  I am so excited to be back in the classroom after a break from full time work.  I loved relief teaching, but I really missed building relationships with students and parents and seeing amazing growth throughout the course of the year.

I began my connection with our school back in 2004 as a neighbour, listening to the bells and hearing the children play. In 2007, my daughter Kaitlyn started prep (Rebecca was her teacher) and so I began the journey as a parent at the school.  When Ethan started prep I began doing some relief teaching, then some longer contracts and now this year I am excited to be back in the classroom with my own class of amazing learners.

A little about me….

I have been married to my wonderful husband John for 21 years. We met when I came to Melbourne from the country to go to university and have been together ever since.  We have 3 amazing children.  Kaity, who is now taller than me, is incredibly creative.  She spends a lot of time drawing, often using programs on the iPad, but also with pencil and now paint.  She loved the Warrior series of books so much that she has created a similar story, with brilliant artwork and maps along with character descriptions. Jared (who many of you know) has just started year 7 and loves it.  He has made new friends already and is looking forward to being part of the school production this year. Ethan, a fellow grade 5 student, is a very caring and considerate boy who is never without a bat or ball in his hand.  He loves any and every sport, but at the moment is limited to playing Futsal and cricket.

I have 2 younger brothers and 2 younger sisters and I am really close to them all.  I love catching up with them all in many different ways.  My brother Matt and I play in a tennis team together (we don’t win much, but we have lots of fun).  My sister Jenni is a teacher, so we share lots of ideas, encourage each other and solve problems together.  I admire my brother Jon immensely; he works in the Accident and Emergency area of a busy hospital, a highly stressful but rewarding job.  My other sister, Felicity, is my baby sister and definitely one of my best friends.  I love nothing more than catching up with her for a coffee or a walk.  She is the one who always encourages me to try new things.  A few years ago, we began running together and entered a number of running events.  Last year we went swimming every week.  I wonder what new challenges we can come up with this year.  Along with my siblings of course comes the rest of my extended family with 10 nieces and nephews and an amazing Mum and Dad.  I am very blessed.

I love reading.  In my spare time, I always grab a book, whether it is an old favourite I have read many times or something randomly grabbed off the shelf in the library.

I have coeliac disease, which means I can’t eat a protein called gluten.  Gluten is found in many, many things we use every day so I need to read food labels carefully.  Luckily, I love to cook and bake, so I often experiment with different gluten free recipes.  Sometimes my efforts are rewarded, sometimes we have failures, but it is always a learning experience.

I guess that is the way I would like to see you approach your learning this year.  Try lots of new things.  Some will come easily, some will be challenging.  Sometimes you will succeed, sometimes you will need to try again, and try again, and try again.  Every time you make a mistake you can choose to learn from that and improve next time around.  If you don’t try, you will never achieve.

Over the holidays I did lots of relaxing.  We have a hammock set up in the backyard which is a lovely place to lie and read.  My new favourite book is called Counting by 7’s written by Holly Goldberg Sloan.  It was definitely worth reading. We caught up with friends, went to new parks and took our puppy Coco for lots of walks.  One day we took a group of Kaity’s friends to the Adventure Park in Geelong where I had my first go on a waterslide in a very long time. 

See if you can find it on the map of the grounds.  It was called the Gold Rush Rapids.  It doesn’t look that big here, but believe me, it was! I would have put a photo in, but we were too busy having fun to take photos.

I didn’t want to go on it, but Jared needed someone to go on with him to balance the inflatable.  I am so glad I did.  I think camp this year will provide me with many more opportunities to try new (and a little bit scary) things.

Welcome to 5/6A

Welcome!

We have had a busy start to the year, getting to know each other, setting class expectations and establishing class routines.

We are aiming to use this blog regularly to keep in touch and share what we are doing in class so please make sure you spend some time with your child exploring the site.

I am still finding my way around blogging so be patient with me.  I have some very capable students who have been extremely helpful already.

Many of the pages on this site have been copied directly from Antony’s blog (Thanks Ant!!).  Partly this is to assist in my learning journey, but also as we aim for consistency across the grade 5/6 classes.

I’m looking forward to spending this year with the amazing children of 5/6 A and sharing in their learning journey.
